What Is the Real Shape of a Star?

If you go out at night and look at the sky, you may find stars that appear like tiny, shining specks in the sky. Sometimes, people even draw stars with five or six points. But what is the actual shape of a star? Are the stars indeed shaped like the pointed ones depicted in the pictures? Let’s take a closer look at how stars actually appear in space!

What does a star look like from Earth?

Stars, visible to the naked eye from Earth appear to twinkle and glitter. This effect occurs because starlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere. As the light travels towards us, the air changes it in various ways, creating an illusion of stars twinkling. This twinkling effect also makes it impossible to differentiate the shapes of stars from down here on Earth.

What Does a Star Really Look Like?

Stars are actually spherical in shape. All stars, including our Sun, are round. This spherical shape is due to the force of gravity. Gravity pulls everything in the star towards its center that’s results in a rounded shape.

Are Stars Perfectly Round?

Although stars generally are round, they are not perfectly spherical. Some stars rotate rather quickly. When this happens, they can become slightly compressed at the top and bottom, as if they were flattened balls. This shape is called an ‘oblate spheroid’. The faster a star rotates, the more elongated it can become.

Our Sun is an excellent example. Although we imagine the Sun as a perfect sphere, it bulges out slightly in the middle.

Why Do Stars Look Different from Drawings?

You may ask why we depict stars with pointy ends while, in actuality, they are round in shape. The points on a star in drawings are derived from the manner in which light interacts with our atmosphere and then with our eyes. In a starburst, it is the reflection of the light of a star that illuminates our eyes or the lens of a camera. This makes stars appear as if they have rays or points originating from them when, in fact, they do not.

This starburst effect occurs even more when we employ the telescope to look at stars. How light penetrates the lens or mirror of a telescope can make stars appear to have spikes. But in space, while there isn’t any atmosphere to distend the images we see or lenses through which these images can be distorted, stars don’t have points and they appear spherical.

Is Observing the Form of a Star with the Naked Eye Possible?

The stars twinkling in the night are incredibly distant from Earth. The closest star, apart from the Sun is Proxima Centauri, located about 4.25 light-years away. This means that it takes light over four years to travel from that star to Earth. Stars are so far away, that when viewed with the naked eye or a standard telescope, the shape of a star cannot be discerned.

However, scientists use special telescopes to study stars in detail. Through their work, we now know that stars are spherical in shape much like our Sun, which is a middle-sized star. In fact, thanks to the force of gravity, stars of all sizes from huge red giants to the tiny cool stars all share this spherical shape.

Stars are magnificent celestial bodies, and learning their shape helps us appreciate our universe and continue to ask questions about it. So, keep gazing up at the sky and wondering because there are still many mysteries waiting to be discovered in the stars!
