#10 Greenland shark

Greenland sharks boast of an exceptional lifespan. Studies based on radiocarbon dating of eye tissues have estimated the age of some individuals to be well over 400 years old, which is extremely long for a fish.

 

The Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) is a large, cold-water shark species found primarily in the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans. Greenland sharks are typically dark in color, and have tough skin and robust and cylindrical bodies. They have a broad and rounded snout, small eyes, and a large mouth filled with numerous small, sharp teeth. These sharks are among the largest species of shark, with adults averaging around 4 to 6 meters (13 to 20 feet) in length. The longevity of Greenland sharks is attributed to several factors, including slow growth rate, low metabolic rate, and cold water environment.

#9 Bowhead whale

The bowhead whale is one of the longest-lived mammals known, with individuals capable of living over 200 years, with the oldest thought to be around 211 years old.

 

Bowhead whales have a distinct appearance with a large, dark-colored body and a massive, triangular head. They lack a dorsal fin but have a series of dorsal humps along their back. The most notable feature of the bowhead whale is its exceptionally long baleen plates , which can reach lengths of over 4 meters (13 feet). These baleen plates are used for filter-feeding on small organisms such as krill and copepods. Bowhead whales are one of the largest whale species, with adults reaching lengths of around 14 to 18 meters (46 to 59 feet).

 

They inhabit cold, ice-covered waters and are well-adapted to life in the Arctic environment. During the summer months, they can be seen in areas such as the Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea, Beaufort Sea, and Hudson Bay. In winter, they migrate southward, but some populations remain in ice-covered regions year-round.

#8 Galapagos tortoise

The Galapagos tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra) is a large, long-lived tortoise species that is endemic to the Galapagos Islands, a volcanic archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Ecuador.

 

The Galapagos tortoise is the largest living tortoise species, with adults reaching impressive sizes. Males are larger than females. They have a robust and dome-shaped shell that can vary in color, ranging from dark brown to black. The tortoise’s neck is long and thick, enabling it to reach vegetation on higher branches. They have strong limbs and large, round feet with heavy scales. The tortoise’s head is relatively small, with a beak-like mouth. The exact maximum lifespan of Galapagos tortoises is not precisely known, but there have been accounts of tortoises living well over 150 years.

 

The longevity of Galapagos tortoises is believed to be a result of their slow metabolism, low reproductive rate, and lack of natural predators in their native habitat. These tortoises have evolved to endure periods of scarcity, with the ability to survive for months without food or water. Additionally, they have an exceptional capacity for efficient DNA repair, which may contribute to their longevity.

#7 Koi fish

Koi fish are highly sought after in the world of ornamental fishkeeping due to their colorful appearance. They have a long, streamlined body with a slightly arched back. Their scales are smooth and can come in a variety of colors and patterns, including white, black, red, yellow, blue, and orange.


It is not uncommon for well-maintained and well-cared-for American koi fish to live 15–20 years. Japanese koi fish can live beyond 50 years. The lifespan of koi fish is influenced by factors such as genetics, diet, water quality, and overall health. Hanako, the oldest koi fish ever recorded, lived for 226 years.


Koi fish are primarily found in artificial ponds, water gardens, and decorative ponds in various parts of the world. Originating from selective breeding in Japan, they were developed from common carp, which are native to East Asia.

#6 Red sea urchin

Research has shown that red sea urchins can live for over 100 years, with some individuals reaching ages of 200 years or more. Their longevity is attributed to their slow growth rate, low metabolic rate, and efficient cellular repair mechanisms. The longevity of red sea urchins has been studied for various reasons, including their potential for understanding the aging process.


The red sea urchin has a round to slightly flattened body covered in long, sharp spines. The color of the spines ranges from red to brown, and the body has a similar shade too. Red sea urchins have a hard exoskeleton made up of calcium carbonate plates, providing protection for their internal organs.


Red sea urchins are found along the eastern Pacific Ocean, from Alaska to Baja California, Mexico. They inhabit intertidal zones and subtidal areas with rocky or kelp forest habitats. These urchins are commonly found in areas with strong currents, clinging to rocks or other hard surfaces using their tube feet. Their eggs are a delicacy included in various cuisines.

#5 Ocean quahogs

Ocean quahogs are clams that can live for almost 400 years or more, and they develop growth rings just like tree trunks. They spend years buried under sediments and have a very slow metabolism, all contributing to their long but quite sessile life.


Ocean quahogs have rounded and elongated shells with concentric growth rings. The shells are thick and can range in color from light brown to dark purple. The clam’s body is soft and typically grayish-white in color. They have a muscular foot that enables them to burrow into sandy or muddy sediments.


Ocean quahogs are found in the North Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the coastal waters of Greenland and Iceland to the northeastern coast of North America. They inhabit sandy or muddy sediments and have been found at depths of 3,300 ft below sea level. Since they are found at varying depths, it is no surprise that they can survive across a wide range of temperatures.

#4 African elephant

The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is an iconic mammal found across sub-Saharan Africa in grasslands called savanna and in forests. They are known for their impressive size, intelligence, and social behavior.

Both male and female African elephants have tusks, although those of males are typically larger. Their large ears help in regulating body temperature. The male and female elephants share their name with a farm animal—males are referred to as bulls, while females are called cows.

 

These animals have a very long gestation period as the baby stays for two years inside the womb of the mother. These elephants give birth to only four or five babies in their lifetime.

 

African elephants are long-lived animals, known for their relatively extended lifespans. In the wild, they can live up to 60 to 70 years, although some individuals have been reported to reach ages over 70. Various factors, including habitat quality, predation, disease, and human impacts such as poaching and habitat loss can influence the lifespan of African elephants.

#3 Rougheye rockfish

Rougheye rockfish are so called because of their large eyes, which set them apart from other rockfish. They have rough skin with blotches, hence the other part of the name. Reddish to brown in color, rougheye rockfish can live for a century, sometimes even exceeding the age of 150 years.


Rougheye rockfish are primarily found in the northern Pacific Ocean. They have a broad distribution range, ranging from Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk to the coasts of Alaska and British Columbia in North America. They live in deep waters and prefer to live in rocky areas and reefs underwater.


Their slow growth and long lifespan make them vulnerable to overfishing, hence conservation efforts require a limit on fishing of rockfish.

#2 Giant clams

When we call a clam a giant clam, it is not just enormous, but also heavy. Some can weigh over 600 pounds and reach a width of over a meter. The tough shell can have vibrant colors, some provided by photosynthetic algae that may grow on the sedentary animal.


While there is limited data on their exact ages in the wild, it is estimated that giant clams can live for several decades, with some individuals potentially reaching over 100 years old.


Giant clams are found in warm, tropical, and subtropical waters like the Indo-Pacific Ocean, including the Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, the Philippines, and other parts of Southeast Asia. They usually live in well-lit water and anchor themselves to rocks.

#1 Brandt’s bat

Most bats live for 10–20 years. One specific bat beats these numbers, and by a lifespan twice as long. Brandt’s bats (Myotis brandti) have the longest lifespan among bats and can live for around 40 years. Only six other species of bats have a lifespan exceeding 30 years.


Brandt’s bat or Brandt’s myotis (the genus name is used as the common name) have a compact body with short ears and a broad, flattened face. Their fur is typically brown or dark gray, and they have a wingspan of around 20 to 27 centimeters (8 to 11 inches).


Brandt’s bat is primarily found in Europe and Asia. Their distribution spans regions including Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Siberia, and northern China. They inhabit a variety of habitats, including forests, woodlands, and mountainous regions

Bonus: The immortal jellyfish

Although no one is heading for Peter Pan’s Neverland to stop growing altogether, a trip to childhood might seem fun. Such is the case for the immortal jellyfish (Turritopsis dohrnii). Immortal jellyfish have no documented lifespan in the wild but are speculated to be immortal. They can change from adulthood, as a free-swimming form called a medusa, to a younger, sessile form called a polyp, and then live their life into adulthood all over again, before reverting back to the younger stage of life.


The immortal jellyfish has a transparent, bell-shaped body. It has several long, thin tentacles that trail beneath its body. The jellyfish has a gelatinous consistency and can appear slightly yellow or white. They are typically found in warmer waters, including the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea. These jellyfish prefer coastal areas and can be found near reefs, docks, or other structures where they can attach themselves.

Why should animal longevity be studied?

1. Evolutionary ties: Longevity is an evolutionary trait that has developed in different animal species over time. Studying animal lifespans can help in establishing evolutionary links that explain why the organism can survive for so long.


2. Biomedical studies: Some animals possess exceptional regenerative abilities or show resistance to age-related diseases that humans are susceptible to. For example, naked mole rats are immune to cancer. Research on their abilities can help us devise newer methods to prevent cancer in humans altogether.


3. Conservation: As animals live for different amounts of time, and have varying abilities to reproduce as they age, knowledge of their lifespans can make conservation more efficient by optimizing costs over each lifespan.


Even though all these animals have a long life in ideal conditions, the environment is far less kind with predators, disasters, and disease lurking around. The animals listed here live longer when they are supplied with the best possible conditions, and it is our duty to keep the environment safe enough for these beautiful creatures to be certified as a senior citizen in the wild.
