Who Is Fei-Fei Li?

Dr. Fei Fei Li stands as one of the leading experts in the world having immersed herself in AI since its infancy in the early 2000s when its world-changing possibilities were yet to be fully grasped. Today, Fei-Fei is at the forefront of AI development, tirelessly working to make sure that the evolution of this technology remains thoughtful, ethical, and centered around empowering people. But behind her achievements lies a journey full of immense struggles and an extraordinary ability to persist in the face of obstacles.
An Early Love of Books, Science, and Curiosity
Fei-Fei’s upbringing in Chengdu, China was marked by a deep love for books instilled in her by her parents, who, despite their contrasting personalities, shared a common passion for knowledge. Books gave Fei-Fei access to the world and the intellectual freedom allowed her to explore everything from physics to space. She credits her father for nurturing her curiosity, stating, “My dad is a very curious person and so I think that instilled a curiosity in me.” Her early exposure to the wonders of the natural world instilled in her a lifelong passion for scientific inquiry.
Immigrating to America at Age 15
At the age of 15, Fei-Fei immigrated to America with her family. For young Fei-Fei this move proved to be a formidable challenge as she struggled to adjust to the culture and language. She attended the public high school in Parsippany New Jersey and found herself navigating the unfamiliar school hallways armed with a Chinese-English dictionary. Money was tight so Fei-Fei also worked at a Chinese restaurant to support her parents. Despite the struggles, Fei-Fei excelled in school, particularly showing an aptitude for physics, which she describes as “a subject that combines quantitative thinking with questions about the nature of the universe”. Fei-Fei also highlights the importance of her devoted teachers in helping her navigate and thrive during this challenging period, emphasizing, “I don’t think I could have survived without my teachers.”
From Princeton University to Artificial Intelligence
Fei-Fei’s hard work paid off and she went on to attend Princeton University, seizing opportunities that enabled the daughter of working-class immigrants to study at such an elite institution. But her parents were still back in Parsippany and continued to struggle financially. Wanting to support them, Fei-Fei purchased a dry-cleaning business. During the week she would study at Princeton and return home on the weekends to help with the family business.
After graduating from Princeton, Fei-Fei faced a pivotal decision: take up a lucrative job on Wall Street and alleviate her family’s financial burdens or follow her dream of a Ph.D. knowing that it would not offer them the immediate financial stability. For Fei-Fei and her parents the choice was clear- they had come to America to pursue their dreams, and Fei-Fei was determined to honor that. She went to California Institute of Technology to study artificial intelligence and computational neuroscience.
How Fei-Fei Li Became Interested in Computer Vision
As a graduate student, Fei-Fei was spellbound by the puzzle of vision AI. Humans can interpret scenes contextually, parsing objects, motion, depth and more. But mimicking even basic sight is hugely challenging for computers. Fei-Fei embarked on reverse engineering how people see and began developing algorithms to help computers perceive and recognize objects in images.
Building Human-Centered AI
Fei-Fei groundbreaking work continued at Stanford University, where she became the founding co-director of the university-level initiative, Human-Centered AI Institute. Here she found the perfect outlet for her passion – harnessing AI to expand human capabilities while safeguarding against its potential pitfalls. “I believe technology is a tool human civilization continuously develops to serve people and the relationship here is really important,” she explains. “AI should empower people, not take away intrinsic humanity, dignity or agency.”
Women and Diversity in Artificial Intelligence
Fei-Fei acknowledges that she did not have many female role models in AI research, which was dominated by men in its early decades. She notes that while representation issues were not always on her radar as a young PhD student, she now understands the challenges women and minorities face as “relatively few and sparse” pioneers in the field. However, Fei-Fei finds inspiration in seeing growing diversity efforts and participation that are “moving the needle towards making technical fields like AI research more inclusive for women pursuing careers in science and technology.
Fei-Fei Li's Advice for Young People
A recurring theme in Fei-Fei’s journey is the importance of resourcefulness in seeking and seizing opportunities, even in the face of challenges or adversity. As an immigrant adjusting to life in America, she relied on devoted teachers to help her not only learn English but excel in academics. Later, as a rising scholar, she actively researched scholarships and fellowships that enabled her to attend Princeton and pursue graduate studies.
Reflecting on her experience, Fei-Fei highlights the value of self-motivation and persistence: “Learn to be resourceful yourself to go after what you want.” She encourages young people to leverage available resources, whether that is speaking to college career counselors or scouring online databases. But ultimately, it comes down to drive and self-advocacy. Fei-Fei’s extraordinary career in artificial intelligence research is a testament to what can be achieved through resourcefulness, passion, and perseverance.
