10- Hedgehogs (Spines)
Where they live: Hedgehogs are found in Europe, Asia, and Africa, inhabiting various environments, from forests and deserts to urban areas.
Unique Defense Mechanism: Hedgehogs are known for their spines, a defense mechanism that makes them stand out among other animals. Their spines are stiff, keratin-coated hairs. When threatened, a hedgehog will curl into a tight ball, making its spines protrude in all directions. This defensive posture protects its vulnerable face, limbs, and belly from predators. The solid ball of spikes is hard for predators to open. Evidence suggests that hedgehogs’ quills may also contain unpleasant chemicals to make them even less appealing.

Although they can blend in and protect themselves from predators, hedgehogs cannot defend against vehicles.
