Airport scanners are like cameras that see through your bags! Instead of using visible light, like regular cameras, they use X-rays. Here’s how they work:
- X-ray Source: The scanner has a tiny machine that shoots out X-rays. These are high-energy rays, stronger than the light we see.
- X-ray Detectors: On the opposite side of your bag, there are detectors that catch these X-rays.
- Interaction with Objects: When the X-rays pass through your bag, solid objects like your water bottle or teddy bear block some of these rays. The more dense (or thick) the object is, the fewer X-rays pass through it. For instance, metals, like a toy car, will block more X-rays than a fluffy teddy bear.
- Creating the Image: The detectors measure how many X-rays pass through each part of your bag. Fewer X-rays create darker spots, and more X-rays create lighter spots. This builds an image that helps security staff see what’s inside without opening it.
Typical airport scanners use X-rays in the range of 80-160 kilovolt peak (kVp). This energy level is strong enough to penetrate through our bags but safe enough to avoid damaging our belongings.
