You have probably often been woken up by a group of birds chirping or singing loudly outside your window early in the morning, before the sun has even come up! It might be a bit annoying sometimes, but bird chirping is quite a common phenomenon around the world, and many people have had the same experience as you! The loud chirping, peeping, and twittering that you and others around the world hear at the crack of dawn is referred to as the “dawn chorus.”

Which birds do we hear in the morning?
Various bird species chirp in the morning while perched on tree branches, windows of buildings, electrical posts, fences, and other numerous positions. The first birds that you hear singing in the morning include blackbirds, thrushes, robins, and wrens, because they are generally the first birds to wake up in the morning. These are then joined by birds such as wood pigeons and warblers, but blue tits, sparrows, and finches also join the orchestra when there is enough light for them to see.
What could possibly trigger birds to chirp so early in the morning?
There are a few theories about why birds chirp in the morning. Generally, it is the male birds that do most of the singing. This is because they want to mark their spot and keep their rivals out of their territory, but also to attract females to mate with. Some bird species chirp because mornings are a peaceful or quiet time of the day; therefore, their songs can be heard more clearly in various places. Because singing is costly in terms of time and energy, especially in the morning when their stomachs are empty, birds chirp as a sign of strength and good health, and also to show that they survived the night. Food also gets birds excited, and they tend to chirp when they find a good food source.
It is not only the bird species present that determines the timing of the dawn chorus but also the seasons. The dawn chorus can start as early as 4:00 a.m. during summer and spring, and last for several hours into the morning. It is, however, important to note that birds also chirp during other times of the day. Some bird species are nocturnal , and therefore will chirp at night. Birds that can chirp all night long include the eastern whip-poor-will, barred owl, and mockingbird.
