Imagine living in a desert. The heat is unbearable, there is barely any water, and every step feels so much heavier on the hot sand. Not to mention, the strong, swirling winds that feel impossible to walk through, while also leaving you sandy in all nooks and crannies. Sounds awfully hard, right?

Now, imagine you had your own supply of water that would comfortably last you days. You had thick skin that could protect you from the heat, long eyelashes that could keep the sand out of your eyes, and strong legs that could easily walk on the sand.

If you had all these things, you would be a camel! So how do camels survive in the desert when conditions seem impossible for most creatures? Their remarkable adaptations transform these harsh environments into their perfect habitat. The desert doesn’t sound so bad now, does it?

Camels are mammals. They are closely related to llamas and alpacas. Often known as “the ship of the desert,” camels have become essential to the livelihoods of those who live in deserts. They help carry people from one place to another, transport heavy loads, and even provide milk and meat.

Anatomical Adaptations: From Feet to Eyelashes

An adaptation is a change in the body of a living organism that improves its chances of survival. Camels have many adaptations that help them thrive in deserts.

1. The Camels Hump: More than just water storage 

Contrary to Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories, camels did not get their humps from haughtily saying humph! Also contrary to popular belief, camels do not store water in their humps!  In fact, humps are essential storage organs. They are made up of fat- upto 80 pounds worth and this concentrated fat reserve provides the camel with energy and hydration hen food is scarce. When fat is broken down, it produces water as a byproduct. 

As camels use these fat reserves during long journeys across food-scarce desert terrain, their humps start shrinking and may even flop to one side. But once they get food again, the humps gradually replenish and stand tall. This visible indicator of a camel’s nutritional status helps herders monitor their animals’ health at a glance.

 

2. Long, thick eyelashes 

They have two rows of eyelashes that keep the sand out of their eyes, and also help keep the surface of the eye moist.

3. Wide and padded feet

Sand is notoriously hard to walk on, even more so when it is hot. Camels have wide feet with thick pads that help them walk easily on the sand while protecting them against the heat.

4. Nostril flaps

Camels can close their nostrils during sandstorms, so that sand does not go inside their nose. Moreover, closing their nostrils partially also prevents water loss when they exhale.

5. Long legs

The desert heat is no joke. The sand heats up to extremely high temperatures. Camels are kept safe because their long legs keep their bodies further up off the ground. Their long legs also help them cover long distances faster.

How Camel Digestive Systems and Kidneys Master Desert Water Conservation

Camels have evolved extraordinary digestive and renal systems that maximize water retention and nutrient extraction in ways that would be impossible for most mammals. These biological innovations are key to understanding how camels survive in the desert’s unforgiving conditions.

 

6. Extracting Maximum Nutrition from Sparse Vegetation

Camels have to go long periods of time without drinking water. They overcome this by extracting water out of the food they eat. Their digestive systems break down the plants they eat and use that moisture as a source of water.

7. Specialized Kidneys and Urine: Champions of Water Conservation 

Conserving water is very important to surviving in the desert. Camels have specialized excretory systems that reabsorb most of the water they consume. This makes their urine thick and syrupy.

8. Temperature Regulation: How Camels Beat the Desert Heat

In the scorching desert where temperatures regularly exceed 100°F (38°C), camels use remarkable temperature regulation strategies unlike any other mammal.  They’ve evolved a flexible body temperature that would be fatal to most creatures. While humans maintain a strict body temperature around 98.6°F, camels allow their internal temperature to fluctuate by up to 12°F throughout the day—rising during daylight hours and cooling at night.

This temperature flexibility means camels don’t waste precious water resources on sweating until absolutely necessary. Their thick coat, which might seem counterintuitive for desert living, actually insulates against external heat and reduces moisture loss. Additionally, camels orient themselves to minimize sun exposure, presenting the smallest possible body surface to direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day.

Perhaps most impressively, camels can tolerate dehydration levels that would kill other mammals. They can lose up to 30% of their body weight in water without suffering ill effects—a human would perish after losing just 12-15%.
