Still, new research reveals a surprising concern: these drugs may be linked to rare but potentially blinding eye conditions. While these medications promise to help with weight loss and diabetes, scientists are raising questions about how they might affect eye health.
A recent review published in JAMA Ophthalmology found that nine patients taking semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy) and tirzepatide (found in Mounjaro and Zepbound) experienced serious vision issues. Researchers are now calling for more investigation to understand the actual risks.
GLP-1 receptor agonists, like Ozempic and Wegovy, are commonly used to manage diabetes and aid in weight loss. These drugs work by mimicking a natural hormone that regulates blood sugar levels and appetite. However, as their popularity skyrockets, scientists are observing new and unexpected side effects.
The study was conducted on nine patients who were facing various vision-related issues after taking these medications. According to lead author Dr. Bradley Katz, an ophthalmologist and a professor at the University of Utah, the findings are concerning due to the sheer number of people using these medications. “Between 2–3% of the U.S. population received a prescription for one of these medications in 2023,” Katz noted, emphasizing the need to monitor their long-term effects.
Researchers conducted a retrospective review of patient cases, examining people who experienced vision-related complications after starting semaglutide or tirzepatide. By analyzing these cases, the team identified patterns suggesting a potential link between the medications and these rare optic conditions.
Scientists believe rapid drops in blood sugar may trigger these eye problems. When blood sugar levels fall quickly, it can cause fluid shifts in the eye, leading to optic nerve swelling. This pressure can disrupt blood flow and cause irreversible damage to the delicate structures of the eye.
While these cases are rare, the findings highlight an urgent need for further research and patient awareness. With millions of people using GLP-1 medications, even a small risk can affect thousands. Key implications include:

Dr. Mir Ali, a bariatric surgeon at MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center in California, suggests, “As with all medications, if a patient notices a significant change in vision or any other system, they should contact their prescribing provider. Since there is widespread use of these medications, people need to be aware of all potential side effects and complications. However, since eye problems are very rare, it probably would not impact the frequency people on these medications should have their eyes examined.”
The next step for researchers is to conduct larger, more comprehensive studies to confirm whether GLP-1 drugs directly cause these eye conditions. Dr. Katz and his team are also working with other medical institutions to expand their investigation and push for FDA involvement.
