Wild Boars Still Radioactive Decades After Nuclear Incidents

For over 30 years, scientists have been puzzled by the persistently high levels of radioactive cesium found in wild boar meat across Central Europe. This contamination has lingered much longer than expected after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. 

But now, researchers from universities in Vienna and Hannover believe they have solved the “wild boar paradox” – and the culprit is an unexpected source from decades ago.

Nuclear Weapons Tests to Blame

Using precise measurements, the scientists traced the radioactive fingerprints in the wild boar meat. By quantifying the ratios of different cesium isotopes, they could distinguish between the fallout from Chernobyl and the remnants of nuclear weapons tests from the 1960s. 

Their findings revealed something surprising: while approximately 90% of the cesium-137 in Central Europe originated from Chernobyl, a significant portion – up to 68% in some wild boar meat samples – could be attributed to the nuclear weapons tests decades earlier.

The Culprit: Deer Truffles

The explanation lies in the diet of wild boars, which love eating deer truffles – underground mushrooms found deep in the soil. Cesium from both Chernobyl and the old weapons tests has been slowly migrating downwards over decades. 

So, while the truffles are now absorbing cesium released by Chernobyl, they had already taken up cesium from the nuclear tests years earlier. This complicated interplay of different radiation sources coupled with the natural decay of the isotopes, has resulted in a relatively constant level of radioactivity in the truffles and, subsequently, in the wild boar meat.

A Lingering Legacy

The findings suggest the radioactive wild boar issue may persist for years to come. Professor Georg Steinhauser explains:

“Our work shows how complicated natural ecosystems can be, but also precisely that the answers to such riddles can be found if your measurements are sufficiently accurate.”

With some areas facing overpopulation of wild boars due to reduced hunting, this radioactive legacy serves as a reminder of the long-lasting environmental impact of nuclear incidents – both past and present.
