Sharks are known as swimming noses because of their extraordinary sense of smell. They can smell as far as a quarter mile away.
It’s been proven that some species can detect just one drop of blood in 1 million drops of water! This would be like noticing a teaspoon of chocolate syrup in 500,000 liters of milk, or enough to fill two small swimming pools.
Their smelling distance isn’t fixed; it depends on many factors such as the concentration of the smell, the current’s direction, and speed. However, with significant disturbances like a flood, which brings a rush of new scents into the water, sharks might sense these changes even further away.
Research suggests that certain species of sharks, like the lemon shark, can track scents for several kilometers. So, if a flood were to occur, stirring up a lot of scents, a shark might potentially detect it from many kilometers away. Still, these distances can vary greatly based on the factors mentioned earlier. As science progresses, we’ll likely learn more about these amazing creatures and their powerful noses.
