Cats do not smile in the same way humans do.Often, cats try to pull in scent from stuff like urine to the top of their mouth. Here,a sensory organ known Jacobson’s organ is used to analyse the scent. When a cat does this, it curls its lips and squints, a combination that resembles a smile. However, this response has nothing to do with happiness and is called ‘flehmen response’.
In humans, smiling is primarily a facial expression that involves the upward movement of the corners of the mouth, usually expressing happiness, amusement, or sociability. Cats do not use facial expressions to communicate emotions in the same manner as humans.
However, cats have their own ways of expressing contentment and pleasure:
1. Purring: One of the most well-known indicators of a content cat is purring. While cats might also purr in situations of distress or pain, in many cases, a purring cat is showing that they are relaxed or comfortable.
2. Slow Blinking: A cat might slowly blink or close its eyes when it’s content or when it trusts its environment. This is often referred to as “cat kisses.”
3. Kneading: Cats might knead soft surfaces with their paws, which originates from kittenhood when they knead their mother’s belly to stimulate milk flow. When adult cats knead, it’s often a sign of comfort or contentment.
4. Body Posture: A relaxed cat might sprawl out, show its belly, or have a relaxed tail. These can be indicators of content and comfortable cat.
