Scientists have made an intriguing discovery that could solve one of ancient Egypt’s enduring mysteries. A long-buried branch of the Nile River, once flowing alongside more than 30 pyramids, has been uncovered. This hidden river, now revealed under desert and farmland, potentially explains how the ancient Egyptians transported the massive stone blocks used to build their iconic monuments.
Running for 64 kilometers, this river branch passed by the famous Giza pyramid complex, among other wonders. The study, suggests that this waterway was integral to the construction of these ancient structures. Its discovery helps explain why 31 pyramids were built in a chain along what is now a barren desert strip in the Nile Valley, dating back between 4,700 and 3,700 years ago.
This desert strip, near the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, includes the Great Pyramid of Giza – the only surviving wonder of the ancient world – as well as the pyramids of Khafre, Cheops, and Mykerinos. Yet, the exact location, shape, size, and proximity of this mega waterway to the pyramids were uncertain until now.
Eman Ghoneim, the lead study author from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, explained that the international team of researchers used radar satellite imagery to map the river branch, which they named Ahramat – “pyramids” in Arabic. This radar technology allowed them to penetrate the sand and reveal hidden features, including buried rivers and ancient structures.

Field surveys and sediment cores confirmed the presence of the river, as detailed in the journal Communications Earth & Environment. The river, once mighty, started to be covered in sand around 4,200 years ago, possibly due to a major drought, the scientists suggested.
The Giza pyramids stood on a plateau about a kilometer from the river’s banks. Many of these pyramids featured a “ceremonial raised walkway” running alongside the river, ending at the Valley Temples, which served as harbors. This setup indicates that the river was crucial for transporting the enormous building materials and workmen needed for pyramid construction.
How the ancient Egyptians managed to build such enduring structures has long been a mystery. Suzanne Onstine, a study co-author from the University of Memphis, noted that transporting these heavy materials by river would have been much easier than hauling them over land. The riverbanks might have also been the reception points for the pharaohs’ funeral processions before their bodies were moved to their final resting places within the pyramids.
The discovery sheds light on why the pyramids were built in various locations. The river’s course and volume changed over time, forcing different dynasties to make different choices about pyramid sites. Onstine remarked that this find highlights the intimate connection between geography, climate, environment, and human behavior.
This fascinating discovery not only unravels part of the mystery surrounding pyramid construction but also enriches our understanding of ancient Egyptian civilization and its relationship with the natural world.
