Seashells are the hard, protective covers made by some sea animals. These animals are called mollusks , and they include creatures like snails and clams. You can find seashells on beaches everywhere, from hot tropical islands to cold arctic shores.
Not all shells are hard either. Some shells can be soft too, like that of shrimps. The shells that are really hard, these are made by depositions of calcium carbonate in the shell. These are thus aptly named, calcareous shells.
The world's largest seashells
Some seashells are really, really big. The biggest one of all is known as the Giant Clam. It’s not just the largest; it’s also the heaviest. A giant clam can weigh the same as a small piano! Imagine that. Some of these clams are even 4 feet long, which is taller than a lot of kids.
Another huge seashell is the Triton’s trumpet. This one is not as heavy as the giant clam, but it’s still quite big. The Triton’s trumpet shell is shaped like a long horn that twists around. These shells can grow up to 2 feet long. That’s like holding a two-foot-long sea trumpet!
Finally, we have Lightning Whelk. While it’s smaller than the giant clam and the Triton’s trumpet, the Lightning Whelk is still considered large for a seashell. These shells can grow up to 16 inches long, which is longer than a standard ruler. Plus, the Lightning Whelk has a neat spiral shape, making it a fun find on the beach.

Fascinating features of giant seashells
One of the most amazing things about these big seashells is their size. The Giant Clam can get as big as a small couch. But there’s more to these shells than just their size. They come in a wide variety of colors, including shades of pink, blue, and many others. The diet of the mollusk and the environment it lives in can affect the shell’s color.
As for weight, these large seashells can be quite heavy. As I mentioned earlier, the Giant Clam is as heavy as a small piano, or even a baby elephant. That would be quite a shell to try and lift!
How seashells grow?
Seashells start off small and get bigger over time. The animal that lives inside the shell, the mollusk, is responsible for making the shell grow. The mollusk makes a substance called calcium carbonate, which it uses to build and expand its shell. As the mollusk gets bigger and bigger, so does its shell. However, growing a shell is a slow process. It can take many years for a seashell to reach its full size.

The importance of seashells
Seashells are more than just pretty decorations. They have important roles in the natural world. For one, they provide homes for a wide range of animals. Some birds even use seashells to help them build their nests!
People have found lots of uses for seashells too. They can be used as tools, made into jewelry, and have even been used as a form of money. What’s more, scientists can study seashells to learn more about the history of the ocean and how the climate is changing.
Glossary
Mollusks: A group of soft-bodied invertebrate animals, many of which have hard protective shells. Examples include snails, clams, and octopuses.
Calcium Carbonate: A chemical compound found naturally in seashells, eggshells, limestone, and other materials. Mollusks use it to build their shells.
