You’d probably be surprised to learn that shark teeth are actually scales; that is, their teeth evolved from scales. Shark teeth are made up of a component called dentin and are covered with hard enamel , as human teeth are. But how many teeth do sharks have? And what features make their dentition unique?
Polyphyodont dentition: Why do sharks always have more teeth?
Shark teeth are unique in the animal kingdom due to their polyphyodont dentition , which means they can continuously grow and replace their teeth. Unlike humans, who typically have only two sets of teeth (baby and permanent teeth) during their lifetime, sharks have an almost unlimited supply. The exact number of rows and teeth varies among different shark species, but some sharks can have several rows of teeth, each with hundreds of individual teeth. Sharks are born with these rows of teeth lining their jaws in a conveyor belt-like fashion.
However, shark teeth aren’t as strong as ours. On average, a shark sheds a hundred teeth every day. They produce enough teeth to replace the fallen ones, so these apex predators never run out of the bite force needed to shred their prey to bits and pieces.
How many teeth do most sharks have at once?
At any given time, sharks have at least 50 to 300 teeth lined up in their jaws. Some sharks even push the tally to 3000. The number of rows of teeth and the total count of teeth vary depending on the shark species. For instance, the great white shark , one of the most well-known shark species, typically has about five rows of teeth at any given time, with approximately 24 to 26 teeth per row. That adds up to around 120 to 130 teeth in their mouth at once. However, they may shed and replace these teeth frequently, sometimes losing hundreds or even thousands in their lifetime.
Other shark species, such as the bull shark or the lemon shark , have more rows of teeth and may carry even more teeth at any one time. Lemon sharks, for example, can have up to 27 rows of teeth. This remarkable dental adaptation allows them to maintain their hunting prowess throughout their lives.
Why do they have so many rows of teeth?
The primary purpose of having multiple rows of teeth is to ensure that sharks always have sharp, functional teeth for catching and consuming prey. Whether tearing through challenging prey like seals or munching on smaller fish, sharks need their teeth to be in optimal condition for hunting success. Without the ability to replace their teeth, they would soon find it difficult to secure their meals.
