Yes, electricity can be dangerous and even deadly, but it’s not the electricity itself that kills. It’s how it affects our bodies.
When a large amount of electrical current passes through the body, it can interfere with the natural electrical signals that keep our heart beating regularly. This can cause the heart to beat in a chaotic manner, a condition called ventricular fibrillation. If not treated quickly, it can be fatal. Usually, the treatment involves using a defribillator, that can sent electric pulses in a way that restarts the pacemaker.
Electrical burns can also occur when electricity enters and exits the body. These burns can damage tissues and vital organs. Usually, if the current is over 1 amp, and has passed through brain or the heart, it can be fatal.
For perspective, it takes only about 0.1 to 0.2 amperes (amp) of electricity to cause ventricular fibrillation. A small electrical device like a phone charger might use around 1 amp. Bigger appliances, like a washing machine, can use 10 amps or more. However, it’s important to remember that even small amounts of current, under the right conditions, can be harmful.
