Do Honey Bees Have Knees?

Bees do, in fact, have knees!

When we think of insects like honeybees, we think of a hive of faithful drones and workers  in service to their queen. But how often do we ponder an individual bee in isolation, let alone its physical structure or bodily features?

 

Recently, a peculiar incident took place when a bee made its way into my room. It couldn’t find its way back to the window it came in through and required some assistance. To help out, I directed it out to the balcony and back into the air. It was during this encounter that I observed something unusual.

I’ve seen bees hundreds if not thousands of times before, however, this time I noticed something strange, and chances are, you’ve noticed it as well. Think of a bee in flight. Notice how the bee’s legs are suspended from its body? They form an angle. It looks pretty similar to the angle a human leg makes when we’re seated down on a high chair, with our legs dangling down. So, a question began to form in my head – do bees have knees?

 

It may seem like a silly question, but it’s one that I’m curious about. So, let’s dive into the world of bees and explore whether or not they have knees. But first, a knee is a part of a larger structure, namely, the leg of a bee. So, before we talk about knees, we have to clear up a few things about the general body plan of a bee.

 

Bees and other insects are invertebrates. They don’t have the characteristic spine that all vertebrates do, and their bodies are constructed or built in entirely different ways. For instance, a bee’s body can be divided into the head, thorax , and abdomen .

 

So naturally, it’s normal to wonder where does the leg of a bee go? Humans and other mammals have hip bones. Similar to most bones, the hip bone or the “pelvis” has an indented surface known as a joint. Joints are present all over animal bodies and act as points of attachment or connection points. Appendages such as legs or hands fit into these joints and are firmly held there by connective tissues known as ligaments.

But in invertebrates such as ants or bees, at what point do they attach their legs to their bodies?

Weirdly enough, legs aren’t terminal structures on the body of a bee. By that we mean, although their legs hang off their bodies, they hang off the middle portion of their bodies as opposed to the terminal portion of their bodies.


Think of it like this: imagine if human legs were held firmly in place from joints in our ribs as opposed to joints in our pelvis. This is precisely what happens in a bee’s body. The bee’s hips are located in their thorax.

It’s also super important to consider that bees have a lot of structures to accommodate on their bodies. Humans just have two pairs of limbs, namely our legs and arms. In contrast, bees have three pairs of limbs, a pair of wings, a proboscis , and a pair of antennae as well!

 

It makes sense for the bee to accommodate most of its appendages  in the largest portion of its body, namely the thorax.

 

(It’s also important to note that the bee can’t accommodate any structures on its abdomen, as a bee’s stinger is present on the rear end, or abdominal end, of their body. Any appendages that are present on that portion of the body would be literally torn off the bee’s body if it stings someone or something.)

 

So, the three pairs of legs and the pair of wings all fit into the thorax, or torso, of the bee. Now that we know how a bee’s legs are connected to the bee’s body, we can get into what the structure of a bee’s leg looks like.

 

Despite a lack of blood, a bee’s leg and a human’s leg do share a few similarities. For one, neither humans nor bees have a knee bone!

 

The knee is often misjudged as a structure of its own, when in actuality is no different from the point of attachment between the hip bone and the upper leg. The knee in humans and bees are both joints.

In humans, the knee is made up of two joints: the one between the upper leg bone and one of the lower leg bones, the tibiofemoral, and the one between the upper leg bone and the kneecap, the patellofemoral joint. Bees, in contrast, just have one joint that connects their upper leg to their lower leg. This is the tibia–tarsus joint.

There is one pretty big difference in the tibia–tarsus joint of bees compared to the knee joints of humans. First off, the bones and ligaments that make up the tibiofemoral and the patellofemoral joints are fairly easy to identify and isolate in humans.


On the other hand, a bee’s knee is super hard to identify with the naked eye. Bees are tiny animals and their anatomical structures are hard to spot without the help of microscopes and magnifying glasses. Also, a human’s knee is equidistant to the ground and to the hip bone. In contrast, a bee’s knee is closer to the hip joint, almost just below the thorax.

Conclusion

So, the answer to the question “Do bees have knees?” is yes, but they’re not as visible as ours. The tibia–tarsus joint in bees is an essential part of their anatomy, allowing them to perform complex tasks such as collecting pollen and nectar from flowers. This joint is just one of the many adaptations that make bees so successful in their environment.
