Turtles have long been surrounded by an air of mystery, captivating the imagination of scientists and the public alike. At the heart of this intrigue lies their remarkable shells – sturdy, protective, and utterly unique. These strong and natural marvels have sparked countless questions in the minds of young scientists, and they make us wonder: Can turtles survive without their shells?
The turtle and its shell
Turtles (and tortoises, too) have a carapace, which is the top shell, and a plastron, the bottom shell. The shell is made up of calcium phosphate, the mineral also found in our bones. The turtle’s shell is made up of approximately 60 shells that are fused together and also contain critical minerals such as phosphorus, sodium, chlorine, and carbon.

A turtle’s shell is extremely hard and functions to provide a safe home and protection to the turtle. In addition, the shell regulates temperature and serves as a reservoir of critical fats, minerals, and water. A turtle without its shell is like a knight without his armor and a house without a roof. Curious and unimaginable. Indeed, a turtle cannot survive without its shell. The turtle’s spine is fused directly into the underside of the shell. The ventral portion of the turtle shell also called the plastron, is composed of the ribs and the sternum. The shell is essentially a part of the turtle’s body, and removing it would be fatal for the turtle. Imagine living without your skeleton. That’s how a turtle would feel without a shell.
Shedding for growing
While a turtle cannot survive without its shell, it certainly does shed parts of its shell as it grows. A turtle’s shell is made of multiple layers, and the outermost portion of a turtle’s shell consists of large scales called scutes. As the turtle grows, it goes through periods of molting, during which the scutes shed individually. If you happen to have a turtle and it seems like a portion of your turtle’s shell is peeling off, don’t fret about it, as it is a natural part of a turtle’s lifecycle. Newer and larger scutes are already developing underneath.
Fun fact: Turle’s scutes are made of keratin, the same stuff our hair and fingernails are made of.
The tale of the shell: An evolutionary look into the role of turtle shells
While most of us might think of a turtle’s shell as the ultimate armor, it turns out it wasn’t originally designed for protection. In fact, a group of brainy scientists from all over the globe have unearthed some shell-shocking revelations. When turtles were just starting to sprout their shells, the primary role of the shell was to help the turtle with digging!
When turtles first began evolving their shells, one of the key steps of the process included a broadening of the ribs. Broadened ribs made the turtle’s chest more rigid. Now, here’s the puzzling part! A rigid chest makes it harder for the animal to breathe easily or move swiftly, which ideally does not improve the animal’s protective capabilities. But that’s because initially, turtle shells were not developed for protection but to lend stability to the turtle so it could forcefully dig the ground with its forelimbs. Being able to dig into the ground for food and shelter may have allowed the turtles to move from the land and into the water.
Undoubtedly, the shell is an integral part of the turtle’s life. So, the next time you see a turtle basking in the sun or just enjoying a swim in a fish tank, take a moment to marvel at the sturdiness and mystery of the turtle’s shell.
