Can Dogs Catch A Human Cold?

No, dogs can’t catch a cold from a human in the same way we do. Colds in humans are mostly caused by rhinoviruses. Out of more than 200 types of rhinoviruses, none of them have been proven to infect dogs. The way our bodies respond to viruses, like the common cold, is a result of our specific immune systems. Humans and dogs have evolved different immune defenses.

However, dogs can catch their own version of a cold. While we might sneeze or have a runny nose because of a rhinovirus, dogs can get similar symptoms from different viruses, like the canine respiratory coronavirus. Importantly, this isn’t the same as human coronaviruses. Instead of the common cold, they get infected with canine infectious tracheobronchitis, or with kennel cough.

Remember, even if your dog can’t catch your cold, it’s still good to practice good hygiene like washing your hands, to keep all household members – furry or not – healthy and happy!
