What Are Flies Attracted To?

Table of Contents

Flies are small, they buzz around, and they’re very good at finding things they like. After all, why do they have such large eyes? Have you ever wondered why a fly keeps bothering you when you’re trying to eat? Or why are they always around when you forget to close the lid on the trash can? It’s because flies are attracted to certain things. This article is going to explain what these things are.

Why flies like certain smells?

Flies find what they need using smell. If you’ve ever left food out on a table and found a fly buzzing around it a short while later, it’s because the fly could smell the food. Flies are incredibly good at picking up scents. They have these tiny hairs on their body that act like our noses. These hairs pick up smells in the air and tell the fly where it’s coming from.

Smell: The super power of flies

The ability to smell so well is very important for flies. This is how they find food and places to lay their eggs. Whether it’s a piece of fruit that’s starting to go bad or a trash can that’s been left open, flies can smell it from a distance and will be drawn to it. They’re attracted to these smells because these places offer them food and a place to have their babies.

In fact, in an attempt to prove that life can arise only from pre-existing life, food was left covered in one case, and uncovered in another. The food left uncovered attracted flies, which laid eggs on the food, which later gave rise to maggots . The covered food had no maggots, since there were no flies to lay eggs on it. This experiment was carried out by Francesco Redi, which gave rise to the theory of biogenesis — life comes from pre-existing forms of life.

Why flies like light?

Flies don’t just use their sense of smell to find what they want. They also use light. If you’ve ever seen a bunch of flies buzzing around a light bulb, it’s because they’re attracted to the light. Scientists think that flies use light to help them get around. When a fly sees a bright light, it might get confused and think it’s sunlight, which attracts them.

How people help flies find what they like?

We often do things that make it easier for flies to find what they want. When we leave food out without covering it or when we don’t close the lid on the trash can, we’re making things easier for flies. They’re attracted to the smell of the food and the trash. These places offer them food to eat and a safe place to lay their eggs.

Our mistakes help flies

Sometimes, we make mistakes that help flies. We might leave food out on the counter or forget to clean up after our pets. When we do these things, we’re basically inviting flies into our home. The smell of the food or the pet waste is a big attractor for flies. They can smell these things from far away and will be drawn to them.

Flies have caused diseases like typhoid , cholera , dysentery . They carry germs from trash and feces onto the food they sit on. Keeping food covered can prevent these diseases from spreading.

What we can do?

Even though flies are a nuisance, there are things we can do to keep them away. We can make sure to cover our food and close the lid on the trash can. We can clean up after our pets right away. We can also put screens on our windows and doors to keep flies out. By taking these simple steps, we can reduce the number of flies in our homes.

Flies are tiny bugs, but they can tell us a lot about the world around us. By understanding what they’re attracted to, we can make changes in our own behavior to keep them away. It’s a small way we can make our lives a little bit better.

Glossary

Biogenesis: This is a theory in biology that states that complex living things come only from other living things, by means of reproduction. That is, life does not spontaneously arise from non-living material, which was the position held by spontaneous generation.

Typhoid: It’s a bacterial infection that can lead to a high fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. It’s caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi.

Cholera: It is an infectious disease that causes severe watery diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and even death if untreated. It’s caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with a bacterium called Vibrio cholerae.

Dysentery: It’s an inflammation of the intestine resulting in severe diarrhea with the presence of blood and mucus in the feces. Dysentery is typically the result of a bacterial or parasitic infection.

Feces: The waste material discharged from the bowels after food has been digested, in other words, excrement.

Maggots: The larvae of flies, which they lay on food sources like decaying matter. These larvae then consume the decaying material to grow and eventually mature into adult flies.
