Boops and beeps might be the new motto in cancer detection. SpotitEarly has been working on methods to make cancer screening easier. In their quest, they have paired dogs with AI to detect cancer just from breath samples. Dubbed “The Rainbow Study”, the study is the largest clinical trial for cancer detection with the help of dogs and AI. Around 1400 individuals aged 22 to 94 volunteered for the trial.
This bio-hybrid model works on three principles. The first principle uses the presence of a distinct group of molecular profiles of cancer in breath samples. Next, the odor-sensing ability of the canines is put to the test. Various samples like urine, saliva, feces, and breath have been used in detection methods. However, accuracy in detecting cancerous volatile organic compounds (VOC), which are mainly secreted into the respiratory system through breath samples, is higher than that of urine. The third principle is based on how AI tools analyze the canines’ effort to detect the presence of cancer. AI tech detects the behavioral and physical responses of the canines when they smell a subject’s breath and combines it with medical data to provide a highly accurate cancer screening report.
The test demonstrated amazing accuracy in detecting four targeted cancer types: breast cancer (94% sensitivity), lung cancer (97% sensitivity), prostate cancer (97% sensitivity) and colorectal cancer (86% sensitivity). This efficiency was carried on when tested on other types of cancer, mentions SpotitEarly.
The success of this method can pave the way for testing out this new method in further clinical trials. SpotitEarly plans to collaborate with leading U. S. medical centers in two upcoming clinical trials to gather additional evidence for these screening tastes.
