DNA Makes Glass Stronger Than Steel


Glass may usually be fragile, but now chemistry has transformed it into a much stronger material. In an experiment, DNA was coated with glass, and it turned out to be stronger than steel. What’s even more impressive is that this glass is lightweight and flexible. The researchers used a process very similar to how bones form in our bodies. Minerals are continuously deposited on bone tissue, a process known as biomineralization. However, this test was only done at the nanoscale, so it remains to be seen how strong this glass–DNA combo would be on a more macro scale.
